Fertility rates in the United States have undergone drastic shifts in recent decades. One under-discussed aspect of these changes is the role of education. In this talk, I rely on large-scale data from US birth certificates, the Census, and the American Community Survey to illustrate how changes in the educational structure are related to changes in fertility rates. I then connect these descriptive trends with more granular data on women’s occupations, with a particular emphasis on the teaching profession. Education’s role in fertility change is profound and multi-dimensional.
